Course Description
This face-to-face intensive course is suitable for those who are interested in volunteering to support English Language Teaching and Learning, for instance in an ESOL (English to Speakers of Other Languages) classroom.
The aims of the qualification are to enable volunteers to:
Be able to support English language teaching and learning in their own organisational context.
Understand the importance of safeguarding and confidentiality in the classroom.
Be able to recognise and address some of the challenges and issues that English language students encounter.
Support students within their social setting.
Successful completion of this course will lead to a nationally recognised qualification from Ascentis.
Please note: This course takes place on Friday afternoons during term time (13, 20, 27 June, 4, 11 & 18 July) in Rochester, then everyday 9:30 3:00 pm till Wed 30 July (in Gillingham), except for 22 & 24 July (09:30 12:00 only).

You will cover these 4 mandatory units:
1) Assisting in the Classroom.
2) Safeguarding in the English Language Classroom.
3) Practising Language Use.
4) Providing Opportunities for Social Engagement.
Is This Course Suitable For Me?
This course is suitable for you if you are interested in volunteering to support English Language Teaching and Learning, for instance in an ESOL (English to Speakers of Other Languages) classroom.
This course is suitable for those who:
Would like to understand how to support others to learn English as a second language.
Need to understand how the ability to learn English can be affected by a wide range of personal, social or environmental factors.
Are not currently working in a learning support environment but are considering doing so in the future in school, further or community education or other environments.
Would like to gain the skills and knowledge necessary to support ESOL students in a wide range of settings.
May have learned English as a second language themselves and now wish to support others.
Is There Anything Else I Need To Know About The Course?
You will complete a portfolio of work for this qualification. Learners will be expected to attend all sessions and be prepared to complete any work set by the tutor these need to be completed on a computer or laptop and emailed to the tutor before the next session.
You will need to attend with a pen, paper and a folder to keep any handouts.

What Is The Attendace Policy?
In order to get the most out of your course you will need to attend as many sessions as possible. We recommend at least 90%. If you do have a holiday booked during term time please let the tutor know in advance so that we can help you catch up on missed sessions and ensure that you still achieve the course outcomes. If you are unavoidably ill or unable to attend please contact 01634 338400 so that we can let your tutor know, and so they can send you any work you may have missed
How Are IT/Digital Skills Used And Enhanced On This Course?
All work will need to be completed on a suitable device, for example a laptop or computer, and uploaded onto Moodle (our learning platform).
