Course Information Sheet

Description

Whether you would like to learn new creative skills or to look into the possibility of a new art-based career, MAE Community Learning courses can provide you with a stepping stone to progress.

This course is designed for those who are either new to painting and drawing or have some experience in painting and drawing and will help you to further develop your work in your chosen media or/and explore other techniques. These classes are wholly practical with demonstrations by the Tutor in relation to personal and group projects.
During the course there will always be the opportunity to do a collective project, working together looking at a particular aspect of painting, drawing and subject but generally throughout, the tutor will work with you individually or in smaller groups depending on subject and media interests.

Throughout the course it will help to keep a note book, to be used in any way you wish, which will form part of a portfolio of work including your own personal research. This is an excellent way of recording your abilities and achievements and will contribute to any plans you may have to pursue further studies in the Creative and Fine Arts.

What will I learn on this course?
Learners will: 1. Develop competant use of at least 2 painting and drawing materials from: pencil, graphite, charcoal, watercolour, acrylics, soft pastels, pen & ink. 2. Create at least 2 pieces that demonstrate your understanding of the materials being used. 3. Engage with group discussions to develop your creative and critical thinking skills - referring to at least 2 different artists or art movements.

Is this course suitable for me?
Learners will also have: An introduction to or further develop your techniques in drawing including drawing using colour. An introduction to or further develop your ability to translate the third dimension into a two dimensional image using perspective, light and shadow work from still life or alternative recourses. An introduction to or further develop your ability to paint in watercolour and related media An introduction to or further develop your ability to paint in acrylic media and related media. An introduction to or further develop your techniques in water based/ traditional oils.

Is there anything else I need to know about the course?
Please bring to the lesson after discussions with your tutor: - Those just starting out in drawing and painting please bring an A4 or A3 pencil sketch book, 2B pencil and sharpener, Winsor & Newton or Daler Rowney putty rubber. Information regarding materials needed as the course progresses will be given at the appropriate stages. - Your own materials and work box. - Examples of your work if possible. Every opportunity is afforded to help you to develop your work no matter what your stage of ability. On the whole most people can draw in the same way people can write. It is dependant wholly on your particular aspirations and to what level you want to develop your chosen media or, you may be interested in experimenting and moving to pastures new.

Will there be additional costs?
Basic drawing equipment of your own choice (at least one HB pencil and rubber); - A sketchbook or cartridge paper to draw on - please do not purchase until your tutor has discussed your course with you on the first session; - Some examples of your drawings and paintings as it would be very useful to see a small sample of your recent work, if you have any, so that the tutor can assess you skill level. Assessment will play a regular role in your tuition, both initially to set you on the right learning path, and continually during the course to help you achieve personal goals and standards. You will need to provide your own materials for most activities, though easels, drawing boards and printing tools, will be provided. However, if you don't have any of the materials listed above, wait until you have spoken to the tutor before making too many purchases.
