Description
Whether you would like to learn new creative skills or to look into the possibility of a new photography career, MAE Community Learning courses can provide you with a stepping stone to progress.
This 10-week course examines the use and functions of your camera and additionally aspects of creative picture taking using digital cameras. It is designed for those with little or no experience in photography, to increase your confidence in picture making and make your photography more enjoyable. The second part of the course is more practical, covering still life, portraits using studio lighting and location photography including local visits.
What will I learn on this course?
Learners will:
1. Be able to adjust at least 2 different settings on their camera independently to give the best results.
2. Experiment with exposure, focus and compositions in a studio situation to produce at least 3 images.
3. Compose at least 1 photograph using the rule of thirds.
4. Create at least 1 long exposure using flash guns and lights.
You will work on creating a short portfolio of photos to be presented during the end of the course.
Use of Information Learning Technology:
Flickr will be used to show the class your photographs you created during your practical tasks. Online Prezi presentations will be used during the lesson, which can be viewed later at home if you miss a lesson or need refreshing about camera settings.

Is there anything else I need to know about the course?
Please bring to the first session
- Preferably a digital SLR camera (the course may be suitable for those with compact digital cameras, however, they must have manual exposure controls and a lens with an optical zoom covering wide-angle to telephoto focal lengths and ideally a hot shoe.
- Instruction manual and leads
- Future lessons a tripod would be used during practical demonstrations.
- Note-pad
Some of your guided learning hours will be used to set the group and individual learning targets for the course. You will receive feedback from your Tutor to enable you to fully develop and progress.
EXHIBITING YOUR WORK:
There are several opportunities to exhibit the works you produce timetabled throughout the year, mainly in the Rochester Centre Gallery but also at other venues.
Will there be additional costs?
Please note the following costs are not included in the course fee:
Provide your own camera and tripod.
Digital printing and paper costs.
Some activities may require travel to locations, usually local.

In order to get the most out of your course you will need to attend as many sessions as possible. We recommend at least 85%. If you do have a holiday booked during term time please let the tutor know in advance so that we can help you catch up on missed sessions and ensure that you still achieve the course outcomes. If you are unavoidably ill or unable to attend, please contact 01634 338400 so that we can let your tutor know, and so they can send you any work you may have missed
