Description

Whether you would like to learn new creative skills or to investigate the possibility of a new textile-based career, MAE Community Learning courses can provide you with a stepping stone to progress.

Learn how to make your own clothes in our professional studio, you will learn how to use a pattern and identify and record correct fitting alterations.
This is a non-accredited 15 session course taught with one to one tutor time demonstration and group discussion. The learner will be encouraged to develop their own personal course file/ sketch book of information, tutor handouts, and learner notes.
All learners will observe appropriate health & safety requirements in the dressmaking studio as set out in the MAE ground rules /learner contract and will be expected to maintain both a sketch book of their ideas and inspirations and a portfolio of their work produced whilst on the course. This will be submitted to the tutor on the last session of the course.

What will I learn on this course?
Learners will: 1. Demonstrate the working of at least one paper pattern 2. Identify suitable fabric to fit the purpose for at least one project 3.Assemble at least one garment in the correct order using a professional approach to garment construction

Is there anything I need to know about the course?
You will need to bring on the first lesson: Sharp dressmakers' scissors - Pins - Tape measure - Threads x 2 - Sellotape - Notebook and pen - A bobbin or 2 - Marking chalk (purchased after discussion with the tutor) - A sketch book - please do not purchase until your tutor has discussed your course with you on the first session - Commercial pattern and fabric (all learners will purchase these items after discussion with the tutor). Some of your guided learning hours will be used to set the group and individual learning targets for the course. You will then have time to revisit these targets with your tutor to assess your progress. Please do not purchase pattern or fabric until after the first lesson. Your tutor will speak to you in class about what you need

Will there be additional costs?
The additional fabric called interfacing when needed will be ordered and purchased from the tutor. Small amounts of calico for samples will need to be purchased from the tutor, at a cost of around £3.

What could I go on to do after this course?
Your progression course is Q000028A or Q000024A. Medway Adult Education works with many partners locally such as MidKent College and the University of Kent; information about their courses can be found in our studios and cafe. Medway has an exciting and wide-range of events, exhibitions and activities to inspire and help you make further progress- please see the community notice boards in the Rochester centre and again on Moodle. Your tutor will be able to talk through with your individual progression options. Attendance Policy
In order to get the most out of your course you will need to attend as many sessions as possible. We recommend at least 85%. If you do have a holiday booked during term time please let the tutor know in advance so that we can help you catch up on missed sessions and ensure that you still achieve the course outcomes. If you are unavoidably ill or unable to attend, please contact 01634 338400 so that we can let your tutor know, and so they can send you any work you may have missed

How are digital skills used and enhanced on this course
Information technology may be used to introduce skills, techniques, and the work of other artists along with safe internet usage. Whilst you do not need any IT skills to enrol on this course, please do speak to the tutor if this is an area you would like to explore.
